Rev Coghill and Sunday Ferries - how dare he!

One angry Peatstack here...
Listening to the radio this morning, it came as no surprise, given the recent news on this blog site about requests for a Sunday ferry service, to hear of CalMac's move to consultation on the issue. What has angered the Peatstack is not the prospect of debate on this issue or even the possibility of the ferries running on a Sunday, but the contribution of Rev Coghill supposedly on behalf of the Lords Day Observance Society. In an interview on the BBC, the learned Rev compared to commencement of the Harris-Uist Sunday Ferry service during the local communions as like 'driving a bus load of BNP members past a mosque at Ramadan.' How dare this ignorant man compare private people exercising their own totally legal choice to travel on a Sunday with members of a fascist organisation whose sole intent in such circumstances is to intimidate members of an ethnic or faith community? How dare he! He should apologise at once, and if that's the best the LDOS can muster by way of an argument against a Sunday ferry service on Stornoway then frankly they really are the lunatic fanatic fringe that some (though not previously the Peatstack) consider them to be, and their voice in this debate should be treated with contempt.

Maybe that is the way he feels about the sunday ferry issue. A sunday ferry will come to Lewis eventually, but you can't expect the LDOS to be for it, the clue could be in their title. I find it funny that they protest about a Sunday ferry, yet the pubs are open on a sunday, not many shops though, mostly pubs.

Tws from Lewis

when i was growing up in scotland my grandparents were members of the "free church of scotland" since living here have went to the local protestant church which is more in with the "church of scotland"(which i changed too when we got married)comments by the above rev have just confirmed which i thought sadly for over thirty odd years there is nothing like a free church--inscotland or elsewhere(and up till recently i was a church elder),done bible classes for primary and secondary kids, nope as long as you ahdere to any institution i dont think we can say we are free

carol from over here

Yep TWS I know what they stand for, it's his outrageous comparisons that I have a problem with. He's bang out of order.

Peatstack from On the ferry

It's a wonderful world. The rev. Coghill sounds as if he might be fun to listen to, sitting outdoors in the warm sun at the local pub, a pint in one hand, and the local rag in the other. Baptize his pronouncements as comedy, and there, voila, pacem in terris. Don't blow a gasket, Peatstack, it's not worth it.

I don't put on the radio (well okay Terry wakes me up). I don't read snoozepapers. It's bliss living in ignorance! Pure dead brilliant. I gotta question though, how come the congrefations climb into their cars to drive to church on a Sunday? Ain't that travelling? (that's 2 questions, I know!)

Wee Girl from The Hills

I've looked at a map of Harris and I cannot find a village called Ramadan. I have rung Galson Motors and they have not provided any buses for a trip to a place of this name. I guess it must be on the west side of Harris as the Golden Road would be a bit dodgy to take a coach along. And who is this Rev Coghill - did he write Thomas tha Tank - if he didn't I think he should have.

Calumannabel from Barvas National Park

It is the comparison that irks and rightly so. Methinks the Rev [learned no less] has joined the ranks of one who opens mouth before putting brain into gear and who is seemingly a member of the brigade of those who impose their views upon others. Are those days not long gone?

Plaid from who works on Sundays [and every other day]

Having read the LDOS utterances at my leisure, they actually condone people getting drunk on a Sunday because all other entertainments are closed. Because it's the Sabbath. So, go forth and get pi**ed.

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

What is the Lord's Day? I it really Sunday? Not Friday? Does it start at sundown on one day and last until sundown the next? How about Saturday? After all many Mediterranean languages call it sabbath ( Sabbato, Savato etc.). If my sabbath were to be Wednesday could I insist that no one worked then. I don't know about a "Free" church but it is still nominally a free country and we should all be free to live our lives without imposing our philosophies on anyone else.

Hyper-Borean from Sophist Point

Standards must be slipping. Are the days really gone when a richt guid sabbatarian would only condone drinking up until the very chimes of midnight and no farther? I am shocked...

Flying Cat from ahint a dyke wi a hauf boa''le

the rev coghil probably did focus groups in local pubs and decided to go with the flow ...

no FC, they arn't slipping, this is what my comment was about with the students not choosing to come home to no night life lewis on a saturday.....the one night club can't even be open past 12pm. I always thought it was abit hipocrytical about the driving cars to church on a sunday as well, whats even more hypocrytical is we can't have a bus because then the drivers would be working, but, the church people can have a bus and a driver, is that not working? I'm on the fence about the whole ferry business, i don't want 24/7 life out of personal choice, nothing to do with being brainwashed that some god that no-one has actually been able to prove to me exists yet dosn't want us to work/move/breath on his rest day, which apparently is actually Saturday anyway. Funny how he supposedly wants his vicars/priests/whatever they want to call themselves to work though isn't it? And i don't want any backlash from religious people, answer me this..if i chose one of the many religions/churches to attend on this island and it wasn't yours wouldn't i still be just as detestable to you as not having a religion??

tanith from point

Either way, tanith, I don't think you are detestable. Perish the thought. In fact, judging from your comments here and there, I feel you might be quite lovable. Maybe we need some testimonial? Did you get to visit with Fred and Sally? Are they still talking to you? If so, you are all right. But wait, isn't Fred the same one who works on Sundays (he does not have time for Church services, taking the bus or the ferry, or even going to the pub: old Fred is focused!) - and therefore his testimony would be discounted by the rev. Coghill or his ilk.

mjc from NM, USA

LOL mjc, fred and sarah, not sally. I did get to visit them finally, yes. The lovely bus driver who new every new home owner on the road took me up and down the road twice till we spotted the house! You wouldn't get that kind of service in the city. Fred and Sarah were lovely and very hospitable and i felt very guilty for taking them away from their work all day while i talked at them LOL(i don't speak to many people so the poor things had to sit through me making up for that lol) I think they're still talking to me, they havn't said they arn't, but i don't want to go over yet as Fred is soooo busy and i don't want to distract him.

tanith from point

Yes, Sarah (apologies: must have been thinking of an old girl friend named Sally). Have a good weekend! Wife and I are off for a long drive through norther New Mexico/Southern Colorado to look at the Fall leaves (not many trees in the desert around Albuquerque/Santa Fe).

I fully agree with Rev Coghill's comment which he made on the Radio. At the end of the day, the Sabbath Day has been kept by previous generations, and it is sad that the current generation do not wish to keep the Sabbath in the same way. Whether you are a Christian or not, a churchgoer or not, surely we all see why we have a Sabbath Day, it is a day or rest. We have a command to Remember the Sabbath Day and to keep it Holy. If Sunday ferries gets the go ahead, it will have a knock on effect on all other services and ammenities in Stornoway. Shops will be forced to open to provide services to the public, in all probability, busses will then start to run on Sunday to transport people who wish to use a Sunday ferry. Spare a thought for the employees who may be forced to work on a Sunday. I firmly believe that we do not need a Sunday ferr service, if Calmac listened to the public and provided a better service 6 days of the week, I believe that would suffice us all. If we loose the Sabbath day in our Island, we will never be able to replace it.

DM from Stornoway

I'd like to seperate out the two issues here. My posting was not, first and foremost - and I think very clearly - about the issue of the Sabbath and Cal Mac, but the inflamatory and inappropriate imagery that Rev Coghill uses in defence of his own position on these matters. I think protection of the Sabbath is in very poor hands if a man of supposed Holy learning can make such statements, and I'm very surprised that the BBC allowed such a quote to be broadcast. Surely you are not defending his words? To my mind, it would do the Sabbath case no harm at all if such comments were openly condemned by LDOS, and the debate was properly elevated to the level it should be held at, and not at that low level at which Rev Coghill obviously wishes to see it descend.

The Peatstack from At Home on Lewis

Peatstack you haven't bothered to look at the other side at all. It was during Communion. The fp church is beside the terminal. It was a very insensitive time to start it, but it made sure there was no protest. It is a fair comparison.

DJM from exile

No, sorry DJM, I have looked at all sides of this, and comparing those who choose to do something different / other than you on a Sunday to BNP supporters is not acceptable.
