Hello World!

Welcome to Eday! We are the little island in the middle of the North Isles of Orkney. Population approx 130 and expanding - baby boy born this month and another due early next month. We have beautiful scenery, rich archaeology, an abundance of birds and flora and an interesting community.

Today is the day for the island beach BBQ - temp hopefully in high teens, fog rolling by and the rain gods sent elsewhere. Heatwave - what heatwave???

Watch this space - and if you're a resident - contribute!

Very new at all this - so hoping correct photos will actually appear and not be upside down!

Welcome to you Eday. The pictures look great, But why this population explosion - tell Flotta your secrets.

Bigheid from Flotta

Hi Flotta - re pop explosion - rumour has it that it's something to do with glaring red lights that glow all winter from the Sanday wind turbines???

Old_Stones from Eday

Hello Eday, is London Airport still busy with its weekly flight to and from Kirkwall?

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

Great to see you Eday! Have you got a longship? Keep posting, the site is a bit slow right now but sure it's going to speed up again.

Sunny from Arran

Would a giant flare work as well.

Bigheid from Flotta

Welcome on board. I've not made to to Eday yet. So do tell of all the high-spots to be viewed and experienced.

Mad Lamb from Westray

Yes Arnish L - London Airport still hectic with weekly flight - fog permitting. Have even had hard runway put in! Bigheid - Giant flare hasn't seemed to work in - how many years? Get yerselfs some BIGGG turbines - or better still - have a neighbouring island put them up and reap the rewards, but the greatest visual impact will be on Flotta folks. Mad Lamb - get yourself over here!! We have a lovely view of Westray!

Old_Stones from Eday

Hello Eday, is AL writing in code? what have you got to do with London Airport (Stansted? Luton? or the big two?). Kirkwall? I did not know there were flights between the megalopolis of Kirkwall and London! Madlamb: "high-spots" on Eday? Are you kidding? Isn't Eday as flat as Shapinsay or Westray etc? What is the name of that erstwhile Western (or was it Northern?) Islander who described Eday as "flatter than a pancake"?

mjc from NM,USA

Eday, have you got a picture of London Airport? Could you possibly post it in a new entry - good laugh!

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

Not a pip from Eday. Maybe the famous witch (of Eday) threw him and London Airport off the island altogether. Next thing you know, Sanday will have an airport as well as the Saville stone.

mjc from NM,USA

Kia Ora Eday.London Airport ,plus fog,may well have appeared within "the City of Sails "

Roy from Kiwi Land

Bigheid Re population explosion on Eday: Have you heard of the 'birds and the bees'? Hope to visit Eday in a week or so. Will report on London and weather!!

Starling from Edinburgh

As a matter of interest, how is it that all the island Councils and Partnerships take so long to put their minutes up on their respective webbsites? Up to 5 months in some cases!!

Hamish the Orc from Mainland (ish)

Love the blog. We have just returned from our umpteenth trip to Orkney and 'missing it already'. Seriously thinking of evicting two teenage boys and selling the family pile up to move. Can anyone speak from their experience of moving to Eday or elsewhere on Orkney? Thanks. alocin.

alocin from glasgow

Have just read the comment by Alocin from Glasgow. We made the move up here 2 years ago and have never regretted it. Full details of the move on my website <www.stronsay.co.uk/claremont>

Bruce Fletcher from Stronsay, Orkney

Eday must be a very liberal society. I note from the minutes of the August meeting of the Eday Partnership that "Colin Risbridger is hoping to come out on the 24th August,....". I honestly don't believe that this means what it sounds like...... Hehe

Hamish the Orc from Mainland (ish)

Hello, Greetings from India. Would love to visit such a beautiful place Gussy

Your family would be greatly welcomed on Eday as the population does need some diversification. We now have a pub as well as the stone of setter. The stone is more popular. Come now I'll sell you my house. Try to make it for the wicker man festival. We need new blood.

Eday Disenchated from Eday

Eday is a beautiful and peaceful island and, for some of us, a great place to live and work. I'm not too good at this blogging stuff but just wanted to share a saying I heard. "wherever you go, you take yourself" - I take this to mean that you are with you wherever you go and sometimes a place cannot make that better, only you. There'smore stuff about Eday on the Orkney Communities site and it is gradually being upgraded and will contain more news and pictures. The Visit Eday site, as we speak, is getting a makeover so give it a few days and try that one too. I hope some of you across the globe are making the most of good weather cos we are now getting lots of wind and lots of rain...but it has its appeal!.

Kate from Eday

Can you give us the URL of the Visit Eday site please Kate (see above) - I'm not very good at this interweb stuff and I can't find it. As a matter of interest, can anyone tell me why it takes so long for minutes of meetings to get put on the various sites.

Hamish the Orc from Mainland(ish)

I've only visited Eday once (the kirk on Christmass Eve 2006) but it seems quite hilly when compared with Stronsay. Eday - highest point 101 metres Stronsay - highest point 43 metres. <www.stronsay.co.uk/claremont>

Bruce Fletcher from Stronsay

This is to wish a belated but sincere greeting to Mike and Dee. Our links with Eday go back to 1980 - we remember the view from Fersness Cottage, the box bed, the timber panelling, the view of the steamer to Westray, the bonxies, the island store, the pink sandstone, the bays and standing stones, the walk over the hill to the post office then, never mind London airport when we left the island in that nine-seater. May not have been back there, but have been back since - to Sanday, to Firth, and often look in online too. This morning was prompted by national coverage of the "Max" marriage upset. Still love the islands, brought my bike last trip, but the P & O steamers were far more my transport delights than the inconveniently timed departures, for non-motorists, anyway, from outer Kirkwall. Wishing Skaill folk on Eday all that is best in 2007.

Enid T from the far-flung port of Goole!

Whom ever said that eday had it's quota of witches, warlocks and wizards needs to re-think. We do not hold with prejudice and all of the above are welcome. The more the merrier!
