This group the Soothmoothers? Are they available for bookings? What sort of stuff do they play? Is there a CD Donald and I could buy? Are the Ferryloupers their backing band? Is there time to book them for Day 2 at the Fank?

Aah. We have figured you oot. Someone nort o da heogs, I tink? Am I the gorgeous Swan Queen? Flattery will get you everywhar!!
Ruthodanort from Unst
Is it true that the authorities are putting up a toll booth at the entrance of the soothmooth?

"da heogs"? R., no need to make it harder than it has to be.!! Some of us don't have access to the code-breaking bunch at Bletchley Park (or their successors elsewhere)!!

Unst Rambling, on a less controversial note, could you help me by recommending a book, in print or otherwise available, on the Norn language (grammar and/or dictionary). Is Michael Barnes's book one you would recommend? Clearly you are the expert, and your help would be appreciated. Also, what about a recommendation or two for historical books (say, the past two centuries [I have books which cover ancient history and prehistory already]) on the Shetland and/or Orkney Islands? [Anyone else has suggestions: I would love to hear them]. Thanks very much. Might the Shetland dialect dictionary you mention in your note above - though as yet incomplete - perhaps be available in some form (CD?) on a private basis? Thanks again, and have a good weekend.

To Ruthodanort. Of course you are the gorgeous Swan Queen, with or without green face. Yet you keep some strange company methinks.
Claudias from Unst
Soooo, R. is the one with the green face! Of course she keeps strange company - what with a green face. I do understand she washes it off when on sailing trips ...

What you don't ken is dat my green face wis one o six, as we were six headed monster! So I think it wid be appropriate for someone with the means to post a pic o da rest o me! If not I may start to suffer from a split personality. BTW, the green comes naturally while on the Swan!
Ruthodanort from Unst
mjc - Glossary. da = the; Heogs = name of a couple o peerie hill things that are between Baltasound & Haroldswick in Unst. You either live nort or sooth o da heogs. Peerie = small (Shetland); Peedie = small (Orkney)
Ruthodanort from Unst
Don't be fooled. We have many green face pictures at our disposal. Ruthodanort is a mysterious being from an upmarket estate somewhar deep in Unst.

To mjc. Na - hids da colour green faces go wen feelin seek!
Rachondarox from Lancs
How well I remember that Scottish ballad of my childhood (!! eh?): "Green is the color of my true love's face ..." doubtless sung by a Jarl to his captive Celtic maiden (a princess of course) as his ship made for the ...Faroes.

I have found a picture. I'll stick it on the blog soon.

There is no new Shetland dictionary available as far as I know. Buy you could find an online version if you look at http://www.shetlopedia.com/Shetland_Dictionary The Shetland Dictionary Project allows users to add their own Shetland words, as well as review the words already posted. There are a few hundred words up there already so it's a good place to start. Find out the meaning of daek, dagalien and daggri, and many more on the D index http://www.shetlopedia.com/Shetland_Words:D
