An important aspect to consider when you're discussing the use of language is voice. There are three types of voice you should be able to identify: direct speech, internal monologue and external narrative.

Read the following definitions and make sure you understand what each one means.

Direct speech presents you with the actual words spoken by the character.

Internal monologue is what allows you to understand unspoken thoughts and feelings; only the reader - no character within the book - is given this insight.

External narrative is the voice of the storyteller: moving the story along, setting each scene and assembling characters.
