Iain Crichton Smith uses all three types of voice in Consider the Lilies, and moves very smoothly between them. Let's look at a specific passage to examine the effect of the different voices.
Read the section from Chapter 15 beginning "He read the letter very carefully. So that was it indeed! " to " But, no, he said firmly to himself, it will not always be, this waste, this terrible waste." (pg 101 - 102)
Now, identify what type of voice is being used in each of the following quotes:
Quote
Direct Speech
Internal Monologue
External Narrative
He read the letter again very carefully.
Wasn't there something wrong about that ending?
You know, Mrs Scott, living in a small village can be very difficult.
He listened with horror, with great pity.
Why had he sided quite so unthinkingly with the husband before?
