HRH

Plaque commemorating the opening of the Rootes factory.

Commemorative plaque

The Duke of Edinburgh performed the official opening of the Rootes car factory at Linwood in 1963. This selection of contemporary sources illustrates how important this new factory was supposed to be for the future of manufacturing in Scotland. It was hoped that the new factory would create thousands of new jobs in light industry, and lead to many other new factories being built in Scotland.

'Scotland 1963' broadcast by the BBC on 1/1/64.

A television review programme of the stories which made the news in 1963.

HRH Duke of Edinburgh's speech at the opening of the Rootes factory in Linwood.

"This is a great moment for Linwood and for the Rootes Group and it is a great boost for Scotland and we all hope it will strengthen the whole British economy. Indeed many people have cause to be very grateful to the motor industry when it decided to put down 'roots' in Scotland. (applause) And now ladies and gentlemen it gives me great pleasure to declare this … what ever it is, open."
