Leonardo was fascinated by flight, and drew many designs for flying machines. Although he never completed any, he did spend time thinking what might happen if one would fail.

The drawing on the right is Leonardo's design for a parachute. Unlike modern versions, it contains rigid poles, which could have caused a nasty accident on landing.
Although Leonardo never built a full-sized version, he probably tested smaller prototypes.
