1st or 2nd century AD. On display at the British Museum in London.
This letter was found at the Roman fort of Vindolanda in Northumberland. It is written in Latin from an entrepreneur named Octavius to his brother Candidus. Most of the letter describes Octavius' cash flow problems. There is a translation online at the British Museum's Compass website.
Look For - The ink wasn't dry when Octavius hastily folded up the letter. You can see the so-called offsets where writing has copied across.
