Luis de Morales was a Spanish artist who was renowned for his religiously inspired image. Based for much of his life in the western town of Badajoz, he was relatively isolated from the mainstream of European art. That didn't stop him using the sfumato (smudging) technique that Renaissance artists including Leonardo first popularised.
