CHEATING AND DRUGS IN SPORT
Drugs and cheating in sport is the theme of this week's programme and there was no-one more dubious in both respects than Choppy Warburton, cycling guru of the 1890's.
Choppy coached no less than three World Champions but with his secret formulae dispensed from tiny bottles at track side his antics finally got him banned from professional cycling even though no drugs legislation existed.

Jonathan Freedland hears about some of Choppy's more notorious episodes including the race in which Welshman Jimmy Michael was reported to have taken a potion and within a few laps collapsed on the track, picked himself up and then in a daze, set off in the wrong direction. Here is Jimmy Michael Pictured with Choppy Warburton himself (left).
So strong are the parallels which have seen drugs stories dominate the recent World Athletics championships. Were the pressures on coaches and athletes similar? Should we stop getting so hung up about drugs?
