The day John met Paul
John Lennon at Woolton
Saturday 6 July 1957 - the day that a 16 year old John Lennon met Paul McCartney, who’d just turned 15.
The birth of the Beatles took place at an unlikely venue: St Peter’s Church fete, where the highlight was the coronation of the Sunday School Rose Queen. It was here that a mutual friend first introduced John and Paul.

This recreation of the day by those who were there includes previously unbroadcast recollections that McCartney shared with Lennon’s half-sister, Julia Baird; it will take you back 50 years to experience a church fete like any other, except that this one sent 20th century culture off on a different trajectory.

Julia Baird's interview with Paul was recorded in 1998, as she was writing her book, Imagine This: Growing up with my Brother, John Lennon (pub. Hodder and Stoughton, 2007).

The programme also includes clips from an interview Geoff Barker recorded with Paul in 1999.

Scout leader Bill Whiteside has lent us some photographs of the event
