MURIEL SPARK
Muriel Spark created one of the most memorable heroines of 20th century fiction in The Prime Of Miss Jean Brodie and now, at the age of 86, is still writing. The Finishing School, a tragi-comedy about the jealousy of an older novelist for a young hopeful, is published next month.
In a Front Row special interview, Dame Muriel talks to Mark Lawson at her home in Tuscany about her disastrous teenage marriage, the boyfriend who tried to sell her back her own letters and her conversion to Catholicism.
She discusses jealousy and danger as potent ingredients in fiction and why she always gives away the ending of a story as early as possible.
The Finishing School is published by Viking, 4 March 2004, ISBN 0670911739
