BACKGROUND
As Advent approaches, these are 3 very contrasting versions of the well-known text: the formal praise of Gabrieli, the hushed awe of Lauridsen, the unashamed rejoicing of de Massini at the Great Mystery. I must acknowledge personal interest, since I am a member of Cambridge Voices. Ian de Massini, an ex-King's choral scholar, is the founder and conductor, and is an increasingly prolific composer. I have iuxtaposed these 3 pieces in a concert by a choir that I run; and the contrast was just amazing.
