BACKGROUND
The selection is not too long, yet it gives a fair idea of the scope of work by Rene Zosso, a ground-breaking Swiss musician called by Radio France 'the living legend of French culture'. He is here virtually unknown and it is hight time he had UK exposure while still active (he is 69). Any music he interprets bears his inimitable stamp and would work together, regardless of century. Best known for his work with Dr Rene Clemencic in the field of early music, but also for experiments from theatre to electronic music. Responsible for the revival of hurdy gurdy in the early 60s.
Would like to something to make this extraordinary and still avant-guarde artist known to modern audiences (he is unaware of current UK trends, never gave a damn for trends anyway - used to create them). Dr Clemencic could also do with a bit more attention here, he is a major modern composer on the Continent and the Godfather of the early music movement worldwide.
COMMENTS
avery gosfield, Italy René is still the greatest. I used to listen to his Clemencic CDs in college. He know performs with our group fairly regularly (our last CD "le droict chemin, features him). I must admit that the first few times weren't easy: I was very nervous: it felt like working with Elvis! René is a very open and nice person: if you want CDs, he will be happy to sell them to you. He would also love to perform more, and is happy to perform in unconventional spaces (as long as it's decently paid!) If anyone wants to get in touch with him I have his contact numbers: just drop me an e-mail and I'll get back in touch with you. Avery Gosfield, Fri Apr 29 17:24:43 2005
[email protected] I heartily concur; first encountered Zosso's work in the late 70's & I'm still devoted... Zosso is to the hurdy-gurdy what Rahsaan Roland Kirk was to the saxophone; a unique inhstrumental & vocal stylist whose work will forever transcend the very traditions it celebrates. Interesting then that UK revival hurdy-gurdy bores sniff at him for being 'out of tune'! His work with Clemencic is the stuff of legend (try Roman de Fauvel for starters) If anyone reading this can help me out here (offer to tape / burn CDRs or whatever), I'd be very happy to exchange... his Chant et Vielle LP has been my Holy Grail for 25 years! Sedayne, Waterhouses, County Durham, 22nd January 2005 PS - Saw Clemencic at the Wigmore Hall back in 81 in as trio with Andras Keckces & Sergio Vartolo; has he been on these shores since I wonder??
