BACKGROUND
A companion piece to my other selections, representing thjree extraordinary male voices. Daniel Johnston struggled for years with mental illness, including brishes with the law and stints in mental institutions, while releasing acres of incredibly soulful and heartbreaking songs (many seld-released on cassette), all displaying his distinctive, fragile vocal talents. The second selection comes from that great music/literary/cinema maverick Harry Smith and his conpendium of American Folk tunes. This one has an eerie, cobwebbed quality that many on the collection possess. Finally, I was instantly smitten with this Johnny Dowd song when I saw the Joim White inspired film, 'Searching for the Wrong Eyed Jesus' where its performed in a hairdressers. I love Johnny's voice here, he seems so determined to express himself with such earnestness, it bowls me over every time.
