Holst's piece has a sense of impending menace in it's repeated flute riff, more hypnotically powerful, I think than Mars, the Bringer of War, which it bears resemblance to. 'Noise' artist Nic Endo mixes fragments of Stravinsky's discordant Rite of Spring with atmospheric synthesisers, and we conclude with Kawai's spacious, eerie and deeply moving piece. Hence we have a progression from the uneasy streetlife in Holst, to Endo's sacred and savage interpretation of Stravinsky, to the strongly vocal and hauntingly lonely aftermath provided by the third piece.
