Katie Wong's Guide to Swansea
Last Updated 13 June

"The people in Swansea are very down-to-earth, so there is no need to be afraid when approaching them...you can feel comfortable anywhere in town, which is something that is sometimes hard to find in a city."

About Me:
I am a nineteen-year old ‘fresher’ student at Swansea University. My life consists of clubbing, chart music and shopping. Not the most original of interests, I know, but at least it keeps my life intact!

The City:
Swansea is a great place as it blends the best of both worlds; city status in a close-knit community.

Eating Out:
Eating out in Swansea is never a problem. Even though I prefer the traditional fast food option of McDonalds and Pizza Hut, there are loads of Indian, Italian and Chinese restaurants, many of which offer buffets from £5 per person.

There is one place you have to visit, Joe’s Ice Cream Parlour. It is pure heaven for people who don’t care about calorie ratings. It is hard to resist the variety of desserts available, from strawberries and cream to piled-high ice cream sundaes.

I also recommend the pub, The Orange House on Kingsway, if your prefer eating in a homely atmosphere. It offers a well-sized Sunday roast, as well as the traditional pub meals e.g. fish and chips, pasta, pies and chips etc. The staff are very friendly and you can also watch the football whilst eating. But, be warned. If you go there on a night out, it might take a while for you to be served. It is always packed full of people!

"There is a great nightlife in Swansea. Believe me, I should know! The Kingsway is the place to go for the serial clubber where you'll find the most popular clubs in Swansea."

Pubs:
Wind Street is where you can find a number of different pubs and bars. The Red Square is a nice place, but it looks a bit flash for the student. Most of the drinks are a bit expensive, so watch out for special deals (they do 2 cocktails for £5 on Tuesdays). Walkabout is a good place to warm-up before the nightclub, with good deals on alcopops and a selection of beer. Don’t be fooled by the Aussie feel from the outside. Inside, Rolf Harris is nowhere to be seen.

Clubs:
There is a great nightlife in Swansea. Believe me, I should know! The Kingsway is the place to go for the serial clubber where you'll find the most popular clubs in Swansea - Time, which is connected to another club Envy, Jumpin’ Jaks, and Escape.

I think Time is the best club. It plays anything from chart pop to hard house. There is always something going on, so you are guaranteed a good time. It is also pretty big, with a huge dancefloor, great atmosphere and great Oriental indoor décor.

Jumpin’ Jaks is quite similar, but a tad smaller in size. However, this is a great ‘warm-up’ club. It may look like something that has come out of a cowboy film, but there are no banjos or showdowns in here. Escape is an ‘alternative’ club; it regularly plays indie/rock music on Friday nights, and has great drink deals. It also has a more laidback atmosphere than places such as Time and Jumpin’ Jaks.

Shopping: Shopping is also another great thing about Swansea, because everything you need is, more or less, in the town centre. The Quadrant is an indoor shopping centre, which houses shops like WHSmith, Boots, HMV and Debenhams. You don’t need to go far to find the shop you want, as everything else is more or less in walking distance; Woolworths, Our Price, Miss Selfridge/Warehouse, Topshop/Topman etc.

People: The people in Swansea are very down-to-earth, so there is no need to be afraid when approaching them. There is diversity in religion within the Swansea community, from Muslims and Asian. Therefore, you can feel comfortable anywhere in town, which is something that is sometimes hard to find in a city.
