Updated 05 Oct 2006 New to Leicester and don't know where to go this weekend? Well there's plenty to do before and after you've checked out all the acts at One Big Sunday. People from the One Big Sunday message board have written their guides to the town and we've picked out the best bits so that you know the score when you're in Leicester this weekend...
Your guides to Leicester are Shanna Bhambra, Sarah West, Reena Patel, Mo Taylor, Katie Hodson and Elle B. Check out their guides and if you can recommend something they've missed tell us about it here on the message boardThe Town Reena: "Leicester is a great place for everyone. There's something for people of all ages."Elle B has some words of advice for when you arrive in Leicester - "Get your language right. Leicester has major problems with the north/south thing in that it doesn't know which team it bats for. You would be best advised to attempt to talk in a combination of broad Yorkshire and Cockney slang. You won't sound right, but you can at least try..." Katie Hodson has some tips for parking on the big day..."park your car in the city centre and take a walk to Victoria Park, or catch a bus. Park and ride services will run from Meynell's Gorse - Hinckley Road." The Sights Sarah: "Before you head home why not visit some of our famous landmarks...
...get in touch with the other side at our National Space Centre, have a country walk in the grounds of Bradgate Park, or visit the famous racing track, Donnington Park!"
Mo Taylor: "Visit the museum on New Walk which is free. New Walk is the walk way between the City Centre and Victoria Park, so it's easy to find."
Alternatively, Reena's got the perfect answer to see it all: "The good way to see the whole of Leicester is to take a trip on a tour bus. It takes you everywhere and stops in places so you can get off and have a good look around."
Shopping Katie Hudson: "I suggest you kick your weekend off with a spot of shopping on the Saturday..."
Sarah West: "The Shires and the Haymarket are the two main shopping centres in the city...and the bargain hunters might also want to check out Leicester Market. The designer diva will want to go and browse at the shops in and around St. Martins square!"
Shanna seems to be speaking from extensive shopping experience! "The more exclusive shopper can head to St. Martin's Square and The Lanes for those one off outfits and gift selections – my personal faves being Sun (famous people shop there you know!) and Magic Toast for the surf girl in all of us. Also, on the side lanes are beauty salons, independent record stores, retro buys and the best toy store in the country spread over 5 whopping floors - Dominoes! Katie knows where to find a bargain as well: "The market is also another thing you may want to check out during your stay, fresh and exotic fruit, bargain clothes, mobile phone accessories and cheap brand name make-up, is there anything this place doesn't sell and all in the city centre! Eating Out Sarah: "Leicester boasts a huge multi-cultural society so check out the Golden Mile for a great range of Indian restaurants..."Shanna: "I’d recommend Re:fresh – tucked away behind the Shires. This stylish and relaxed eateries offers high quality food and drinks for medium prices. The less flush of us can of course head to McDonald's or any number of burger/chips places located around the centre. For that evening meal before heading out on the town why not try Ask, conveniently located off the High Street for delicious Italian food."
Katie Hodson: "For a great curry check out Mem Saab, and for an Italian you might want to try Covatis a trendy eating house that looks like it belongs in London. There again you might fancy trying out a Chinese so why not head off to Dynasty. A number of other restaurants that offer traditional cuisine like Houston's - a live music restaurant - or treat yourself to a night out at The Case Champagne Bar!"
Elle B has a somewhat different view on Leicester's cuisine though! "Food is always going to be difficult. You can have curry, curry or curry basically". Nightlife Shanna: "Now for the serious part – the drinking and partying!" Shanna has the lowdown on how to start the night off with a quite drink... Depending on tastes of course you can head to Helsinki's for the wackiest and wild cocktails. The casual, “just fancy a beer” types can take their pick from a number of cosy and friendly pubs – notably Lamplighters, O’Neills, The Litten Tree and The Dry Dock. Getting a little merry now... Katie Hodson: "Before you head off for a night in a club, why not have a warm up session in one of the trendy cutting edge bars - Bar Risa, The Quay, Hogan's, Lloyd's, Q.Bar, Time, Revolution and Undecided are among the best of what we have to offer! Then head off to a club to warm up your dancing skills ahead of Sunday!
Sarah seems to know about every club in Leicester - so listen up and learn. If you plan to go to all those bars Katie mentioned maybe it's best you write this down!
"For the garage/RnB lovers you should definitely checkout club 361 - it's Saturday nights are great with a range of DJ's and MC performances! For the rockers head down to The Shed - a great night any day of the week, as there is always a variety of great live bands! If urban or rock isn't your thing then why not go to Creation - euphoric trance and dance. You name it the DJ will be spinning it on the decks down there! All the clubs are in the city centre."
There you go. You now havabsolutelyey no excuses not to have a great time in Leicester!
