Taiwan's president has confirmed a big increase in defence spending, saying China is speeding up military preparations to take the island by force.

President Trump says US negotiators are making progress in their efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, developing a deal that's good for both sides. He confirmed that territorial concessions by Ukraine were still on the agenda, and said the big concession from Russia would be to stop fighting.

Brazil's former president, Jair Bolsonaro, has been ordered to start serving his 27-year prison sentence for plotting a coup after losing the last election. The Supreme Court has now concluded his case, meaning he can no longer appeal.
