Taiwan's president has confirmed a big increase in defence spending, saying China is speeding up military preparations to take the island by force.

President Trump says US negotiators are making progress in their efforts to end the war between Russia and Ukraine, developing a deal that's good for both sides. He confirmed that territorial concessions by Ukraine were still on the agenda, and said the big concession from Russia would be to stop fighting.

And authorities in Nigeria say 24 schoolgirls abducted in the western state of Kebbi a week ago have been freed. The kidnapping of the girls was the latest in a wave of mass kidnappings in the country.
