A statement from the White House emphasized that although he wouldn't be in contention come November's election, he intended to stay put until his official term ended. Ms Harris described the president's decision as a selfless and patriotic act that put the American people first. Joe Biden's Republican rivals were less complimentary. Donald Trump said Mr Biden had never been fit to serve as president, and predicted that Kamala Harris would be easier to defeat.
