From Wales to South America
What does it take to tour BBC National Orchestra of Wales to South America?
- To transport all of BBC NOW’s equipment and instruments 45 large boxes are filled. It takes six boxes alone to transport the concert dress!
- BBC NOW will transports over 260 instruments when they go on tour
- Combined the equipment and instruments weighs 3.5 tonnes – that’s the equivalent of 3,500 bags of sugar!
- Across the three week tour, the orchestra will be travelling for 80 hours to make sure they get to each concert and workshop on time - that’s over three days!
- Across three weeks BBC NOW will travel 17, 171 miles – the same as walking Wales’ Coastal Path 19 times
- This all means one very big headache for BBC NOW’s Operations & Logistics Manager, Andy!
What will BBC NOW do in Patagonia?
- They will work with 29 schools providing music tuition to over 1000 children
- Work across six different towns Patagonia - Trevelin, Esquel, Trelew, Gaiman, Rawson and Puerto Madryn
- BBC NOW musicians will work with five youth and community orchestras
- BBC NOW’s chorus manager, Osian, will work with six choirs (including National Youth Choir of Wales)
- Andy Pidcock and BBC NOW musicians will lead 14 workshops for pupils in special schools
- Grant Llewellyn will give conducting masterclasses
- Catrin Finch will provide harp masterclasses
- BBC NOW musicians will perform six times which includes three informal performances, a Noson Lawen event, and two Gala concerts
- Catrin Finch will perform on La Trochita (the Patagonia Express train)
- The whole orchestra will perform two gala concerts
