Ian Skelly

Ian Skelly has been a familiar voice on Radio 3 for more than 25 years, covering everything from very early music to the work of cutting edge contemporary composers. He works regularly with the BBC’s orchestras, as well as hosting live concerts on Radio 3 given by the world’s top orchestras and soloists.

Born in Manchester, Ian grew up in West Lancashire and began working as a reporter at the BBC’s famed Pebble Mill complex in Birmingham. He quickly became a presenter and worked on several BBC local radio stations in the East and West Midlands, hosting their daily news breakfast shows. He also enjoyed occasional stints as a television reporter in Birmingham and Nottingham, but with music always central to his life, Radio 3 was his ideal home when he made the move to London.

Ian is also an award-winning travel writer for The Observer and an internationally published author. He has made short films in the UK, Canada, Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and spent a fascinating few months as a film producer in Hollywood. He has written and produced documentaries on the arts and music for Radio’s 3, 4, the BBC World Service and for NBC television in America.
