Catherine Cawood
Sergeant Catherine Cawood is as resilient and determined as ever. She won a Queen's police medal for bravery for capturing Tommy Lee Royce on the narrow boat eighteen months ago, but would rather do away with accolades and continue with her day job in West Yorkshire keeping the bad guys off the street.

Catherine’s house is a happy place of organised chaos. Clare is entering into a new relationship with an old school friend (of whom Catherine is wary) and Daniel makes an unexpected return when his marriage falls apart. Even with all of the comings and goings, the house is a safe and happy place for Ryan to grow up in, and as he’s approaching his tenth birthday, Catherine’s next hurdle is to carefully navigate conversations about his dad.
Things at work are equally hectic with a murder investigation team working within Norland Road Police Station after a number of dead bodies are found in the area. While Catherine enjoys leading her team at work, her robust nature is tested to the limit when she is embroiled in the investigation.
The plates are always spinning where Catherine is involved but it’s only a matter of time before they all come crashing down at once. One thing is for certain - Catherine can always be relied upon to pick up the pieces.
Sarah Lancashire on her character
Where do we find Catherine when the series begins?

It's been 18 months and Tommy has remained in prison for this entire time. He was charged with three murders so he's in there for life. Catherine finds a body in episode one and the rest of the series unravels from there.
How does Catherine get on with other new members of the team?
It's very interesting because they are from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). They have been brought into the building to investigate what appears to be a serial killer. She loathes (new colleague) Jodie Shackleton simply because she used to be in the CID and knows exactly how they work.
Does the series still maintain its characteristic humour despite the difficult storylines?
Yes, Catherine’s dark humour is present all the way through. Remember how Kevin Weatherill got deeper and deeper until he got too deep? It’s the same with Catherine.
