Martin Lewis on student loan Treasury Committee inquiry: ‘I am absolutely pleased’
Martin Lewis has welcomed a decision by MPs to launch an inquiry into student loans in England amid "widespread dissatisfaction" over repayment terms.
The Treasury Committee will examine whether the recent decision to freeze the repayment threshold for many graduates with "plan 2 loans" is fair.
Plan 2 loans were issued in England between September 2012 and July 2023 and are still issued in Wales. But campaigners are unhappy with the Chancellor's decision to freeze the thresholds at which people start to repay their loans, meaning many will repay sooner, and those already earning above the threshold will see a greater proportion of their salary subjected to repayments.
Martin says the inquiry is a "welcome step" but that people should not confuse the inquiry for a "governmental report".
