
What are ‘smishing scams’?
Fraudsters are now building their own mobile phone masts to send scam texts to victims. In what is thought to be the first of its kind in the UK, the DIY tower was constructed to bypass the phone networks’ systems which usually block suspicious text messages. SMS phishing messages are known as 'smishing', and involve criminals pretending to be real businesses trying to get your data and money via text message. They are estimated to account for around a fifth of all reported frauds. Nick Stapleton shares the latest examples to stop you falling victim, and shows us the phone settings that can help block them.
