Why do some people see colours when they hear music?

Artist and composer Mira Calix on the perceptual phenomenon of Synaesthesia, which affects around 1% of the population. Musicians including Kanye West, Grimes and Gruff Rhys have all reported to have experienced the condition, which is often described as a "union of the senses".
