Should there be women-only train carriages?

Shadow minister Chris Williamson has suggested that women-only train carriages should be considered, to curb sexual violence on public transport.

Mr Williamson told Radio 4's PM that the idea is already active in places like Japan and Mexico. He added that there needs to be "improved security on trains".

Laura Bates, the founder of the Everyday Sexism Project, said it "sends wider message that assaults are inevitable and we should just coop women up to try to avoid them".

Introducing women-only train carriages "doesn't change the problem of assaults it simply moves it on," says Laura Bates.
