Gooch: Cook rang me and I told him to stay as England captain
Graham Gooch has revealed he told Alastair Cook to remain as England captain, following his decision to resign.
The 32-year-old Essex batsman led England for a record 59 Tests, including Ashes victories in 2013 and 2015, but has stepped down from the role following a 4-0 series defeat in India.
“I told him to stay,” Gooch said.
“His sort of sportsman only comes along once in a generation, maybe even less.
“He’s a great man and he’s still got great things to do for his country,” he added.
