Merkel's Party Suffers At The Polls
German State Election; Argentina Fracking; Zimbabwe Demonstrations Ban
In Germany, the secretary-general of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democratic Union party has said its policies on refugees were the main factor in its rejection by voters in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The CDU could only finish third in the poll, and party officials said the main issue during the campaign was the large number of migrants taken in by Germany over the past year.
Argentina has the world's largest recoverable shale gas reserves, after China, according to the US Energy Information Administration. The government believes that fracking could meet the country's energy needs for many decades. But some of the gas reserves lie under land claimed by Mapuche indigenous people, who say the fracking is polluting their land. Grace Livingstone went to the Argentine province of Neuquen to investigate.
Opposition supporters in Zimbabwe go to court on Monday to challenge a two-week ban on demonstrations.
