It was the photo that shocked the world and hit home the reality of the refugee crisis in Europe: one year ago 3-year-old Alan Kurdi's lifeless body was photographed, lying face down in shallow water on the edge of a beach in Turkey.

The Venezuelan president, Nicolas Maduro, says his government has averted an opposition attempt to incite violence and destruction on a day when hundreds of thousands of people marched through Caracas in rival demonstrations.
