Brazil's suspended President Dilma Rousseff has defended her record during a marathon session during her impeachment trial in the Senate. She is accused of illegally manipulating the budget to hide a growing deficit.
About 6,500 migrants have been rescued off Libya, the Italian coastguard says, in one of the biggest operations of its kind to date. Some 40 co-ordinated rescue missions took place about 12 miles off the Libyan coast.
Actor Gene Wilder, remembered by many for his lead role in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, has died at the age of 83. The comic actor also starred in classic films such as The Producers, Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein.
