Higgins: 1916 helped us gain independence
The Irish President says the Easter Rising was a pivotal moment.
Ireland is remembering the 1916 Easter Rising this weekend. The violent rebellion against British rule left more than 500 people dead and eventually led to partition and independence.
As commemorations take place, the Irish President, Michael D Higgins, discusses its impact with the Today programme.
