Mosley: F1 'simply too expensive'

Max Mosley, former president of Formula One governing body the FIA, says its owners will struggle to sell the franchise because racing has become “simply too expensive”.

“There are only two or three teams that can really afford to spend the money that’s being spent now,” he told Today programme sport presenter Rob Bonnet.

“The others are either on the verge of having to stop or at least greatly disadvantaged by not having enough money. I don’t really see how anyone can sell it until those problems have been resolved.”

He argued that a cap on spending should be introduced to create a level playing field so that “it’s the cleverest engineer that succeeds not the richest”, but not everyone would welcome the move.

“The rich teams don’t want the less rich teams to become competitive,” he said.
