'Because it wasn’t their fight, it didn’t interest men' - Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep spoke to Today, alongside co-host Carey Mulligan, ahead of the London premiere of their film 'Suffragette' - about the militant campaign in support of women's voting rights in Britain.

On why it’s taken so long for a film about suffrage to be made - Streep told Today: “For a long time it was difficult to convince the people in the position to make decisions, who were mostly male, that it was interesting to anyone…because it wasn’t their fight, it didn’t seem that interesting.”

The film's cast and production team were predominantly women and Carey Mulligan added: “We were especially lucky on this that we were a group of women who were so excited to finally get to tell the story and to do it together and with such a strong team of women who were so excited.“
