Former SNP MSP Andrew Wilson: 'There's no appetite for another referendum'

The election saw a huge swathe of new MPs from varied backgrounds. In Parliament there will be a record 191 women MPs, 42 won't be white and fewer will be privately educated.

The SNP won 56 seats in the election with the overwhelming majority new MPs. Andrew Wilson, pictured right, is a former SNP MSP and former advisor to Alex Salmond. he told Today:

“This is a sophisticated governing party now in Scotland, you’d think to listen to some of the extreme coverage in the London media that it was the Taliban that were coming over the border”.

When asked if the SNP would raise the issue of independence again Wilson added: “I don’t think there’s appetite in the country to go again (for a referendum).”

Mure Dickie, pictured centre, is Scotland correspondent for the Financial Times. He told Today:

'The (SNP) candidates that I’ve spoken to are very aware they can’t be seen as wreckers, their voters don’t want them to be going down to spoil things or to make independence look better'.

Dickie added: “But there’s clearly a lot of dissatisfaction with the way the UK works… this is an opportunity for the establishment to take stock and see how we can make the UK work better and be more appealing.”
