The story of Màiri MacDonald's return home to the island from which she escaped eight years ago, having left her family and the place, its claustrophobia and its customs. However, her homecoming is longer than anticipated as the emotional ties ('bannan') renew their hold.

Màiri reluctantly returns home for a funeral and is quickly reminded of the reasons why she left: the local gossips and a face from the past she hoped not to see. However, whilst on the island with her grandmother Peggy and cousin Iain, Màiri realises what was so long overdue - time together. What she is unaware of however, is someone's plans to keep her there.
