Live music in Herefordshire & Worcestershire

Live music in Herefordshire & Worcestershire
For the ninth year running, throughout the whole of December and continuing into the new year, we won't be playing a single CD, MP3, tape or vinyl - because we're giving you the music you won't be able to get anywhere else on the planet.

In 2013, we continued to take the show on-the-road to some of the biggest events and most happening places in the two counties.

None of these artists knew they were being considered for these opportunities - they were chosen based on the tracks they sent into the BBC Introducing Uploader.

This week, hear some of the performances we recorded at Re-Con in Great Malvern, John Kyrle High School in Ross-on-Wye, The Cock & Magpie in Bewdley, Kidderminster College, On Later with Jools Holland at the Wychwood Festival.

Dave Onions' BBC Introducing session

Dave Onions' BBC Introducing session
This week's live session comes from Kidderminster's Dave Onions - who runs the open mic nights at Bewdley's Cock & Magpie.

We struggled to put into words the mind-blowing complexity of Dave's work - so instead, we'll let Jim Lowe introduce him: "Like many others, I suspect I have a bit of a stereotype in my head of what mandolin playing should sound like - kind of gentle and folky, maybe, but check out this piece of playing from Dave Onions and have these pre-conceptions blown away!"

It was the final town in Worcestershire we'd not visited since we started taking the show out on-the-road in 2001 - so it was time to change all that!

On a cold, dark, autumn Sunday night at the end of November, we rolled up next to Pershore railway station to record at Tower Studios - who've just completed a 48-hour "drumathon" for charity.

The five acts on stage blew us away - so be prepared for some top tunes as we head you through the festive season!

Reviews

This week, Andy O'Hare reviews:

Make some noise!

Make some noise!
For the last three weeks, we've been finding out - how loud is too loud?

We're told anything over 100dB is likely to cause permanent ear damage - but just how loud is that?

We teamed up with the Worcester Hearing Centre for a band vs hearing sound-off!

But just how can you protect your ears - without compromising your enjoyment of sound?

BBC Introducing in Hereford

BBC Introducing in Hereford
BBC Introducing in Hereford & Worcester supports unsigned, undiscovered and under-the-radar musicians from Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

Since 2011, we've been taking the show out on-the-road showcasing the very best musicians from our two counties.

Our next recording session takes place on Sunday 5 January at The Jailhouse in Hereford and features four of the acts we've handpicked for broadcast in 2014.

It's free to get in - and this is your chance to see how we capture live music on tape, while being able to enjoy some of the hottest new acts we've got in our area right now.

None of these acts knew they were being considered for a live session - they were chosen based on the tracks they uploaded to us - which led them to receiving airplay on BBC Hereford & Worcester.

Doors open at 2pm - but you're more than welcome to turn up anytime until 6pm.

BBC Introducing Musicians' Masterclass

BBC Introducing Musicians' Masterclass
If you're a budding solo artist, an MC, or just started a brand new band then you should check out BBC Introducing Musicians' Masterclasses.

On Thursday 21 March, we visited various locations across the UK - Glasgow, Belfast, London, Salford & Cardiff. DJs from all over BBC Radio, music industry experts and artists got together to host a day of sessions, workshops and masterclasses.

On the guestlist at Maida Vale were Worcester's Shaun Williams, Malvern's 5parks, Bromyard's Tenz, Droitwich's Case Closed and Bewdley's Barbarix.

Invited to Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff were Hereford's Daniel & The Scandals, Kidderminster's Lauren Wright and man-of-many-Worcester-bands Pete Adams.

We covered everything from song writing & MC workshops to promoting your music & making the most of your Twitter accounts.

We also heard from successful artists about their own musical journeys. Our special guests included Ben Howard, Aluna George, Wretch 32, Devlin, Angel, Japanese Popstars, Phil Kieran, Badly Drawn Boy and the Manic Street Preachers.

This week, we hear from Geoff Ellis of DF Concerts and T In The Park about how to land a festival gig if you're an urban or dance act.
