Pioneering parents
Early attempts at motherhood must have been somewhat experimnetal. Surinam toads have eggs that hatch from pockets situated on the female's back - skin care, as it were. Her hospitality has to be worth it; more must survive for her to go to these lengths. Once they've hatched out from under her skin, the youngsters are straight off to find food.
