Phil Collins - Face Value

Phil Collins sets the template for the 80s with his debut solo album, Face Value.

This was never part of the plan.

For many years, Phil Collins had been the man behind the drum kit in prog rockers Genesis, before earning a battlefield promotion to frontman in the wake of Peter Gabriel's departure in 1975. Eschewing the attention-grabbing theatrics of Gabriel, Collins recast himself as rock's everyman, quietly unassuming and casually dressed.

But by 1981, while Genesis were making strides towards a kind of mainstream rock sound, his personal life was falling apart, a situation he directly channelled into the making of his first solo album.

And when Face Value was released in 1981, it transformed Phil Collins from the drummer in Genesis to one of the biggest pop stars on the planet. A record born of turmoil, it would come to define the 80s, and - as everyone knows - contains the most iconic drum break in musical history...
