Kate Molleson charts the influences upon the early symphonies of Sibelius, including the romantic symphonic music of Tchaikovsky, and themes of Nationalism. Although both the First and Second Symphonies demonstrate clear links to the political situation of the times in Finland, the Symphony No 2 was also very much inspired by a trip to Italy and the impact of the scenery there.
