Autumn has arrived, but the turn in the weather doesn’t mean it’s any less busy. One of the sure signs that autumn has arrived is the cows coming home, when they leave the summer hills around the farm to settle into the sheds for the winter months.
Autumn is a time of transition and change – and Jane shares some exciting news with her daughter. She’s expecting her second child, a little brother or sister for Betsy will be arriving in the New Year.
In the polytunnel, it’s all about maintenance, planning ahead for next year, and finishing up the last of the harvest as she trims back lavender and raspberries to ensure fresh growth in the spring.
Jane plans to cap off the autumn with a Halloween celebration, and harvests some ornamental gourds, which she turns into nifty candle holders for her table, alongside dried hydrangeas and some inventively carved turnips.
In Garvagh, Jane catches up with a friend and fellow farmer’s daughter, the Ulster-Scots writer and poet Anne McMaster. Later in the potting shed, she serves up a hearty autumnal meal for friends and family.
