Tori is an American singer-songwriter and pianist who began to play the piano as soon as she was old enough to reach the keys, teaching herself from the age of just two. She was admitted to Baltimore's prestigious Peabody Institute aged just five but clashed with her teachers over her dislike of reading from sheet music. This would become a recurring theme in her career, as her first musical group formed in 1986 was called Y Kant Tori Read. Although that group's one and only album had very limited success, it led to her first solo album, Little Earthquakes, featuring her breakthrough single, Silent All These Years. Her second album, Under The Pink, reached number one in the UK charts in February 1994, and she converted a barn in Cornwall into a studio for her to record in. This year, she is releasing her seventeenth studio album, In Times of Dragons, as well as touring the UK in April.
Tori said: "I am thrilled to be performing at this year’s BBC Radio 2 Piano Room Month. It will be so special to be at the historic Maida Vale Studios, and I am so looking forward to playing with the fabulous BBC Concert Orchestra."
Back for its fifth year, Radio 2 Piano Room Month sees globally famous, award-winning artists perform three tracks - a new song, one of their well-known numbers, and an unexpected cover version - all accompanied by the BBC Concert Orchestra.
A BBC Audio production for BBC Radio 2.
