Building a Library: William Mivel, Composition Professor at the Royal College of Music, surveys some of the many recordings of Sibelius's Symphony No. 5 and makes a personal top recommendation. Premiered in 1915, Sibelius wrote his Symphony No. 5 at the instigation of the Finnish government to mark the composer's 50th birthday. The majestic finale was inspired by Sibelius seeing a group of swans taking flight.
