British Columbia, 1942. Young Olaf embarks on a perilous dare but he overlooks his duty to his hearing-impaired kid sister.

One of five shortlisted contenders for the 2008 BBC National Short Story Award. This was the third year of the awards and attracted over 600 entries. The winning entry was broadcast on the Today programme in July of that year.
