Antiques to Ambridge - 75 years of The Archers
Christina tells the story of how a radio drama launched in 1951 is still entertaining Radio 4 listeners three-quarters of a century later.
Four actors swap Ambridge for antiques in this special show to celebrate 75 years of iconic BBC Radio 4 drama The Archers. Tracy and Jazzer, aka Susie Riddell and Ryan Kelly, take on Lilian and Justin, aka Sunny Ormonde and Simon Williams, in a rural-themed episode at a huge antiques fair in Somerset.
The teams tune into their challenges as they shop for profitable items to sell at auction. Just like that, Simon picks up a fez hat and then disappears for a cheeky ice cream, while Sunny and expert Thomas Forrester go hunting for him – instead of for bargains!
Across the fair, Susie and Ryan’s expert Raj Bisram isn’t crowing about a pair of pottery cockerels that have seen better days. In Birmingham, Christina Trevanion goes behind the scenes of The Archers to meet longtime scriptwriter and producer Keri Davies, who’s dug out memorabilia from the show’s fascinating history. And radio studio engineer Vanessa Nuttall reveals how sound effects are made, using among other things an ironing board and a washing-up glove!
