New Year Traditions in Rural Wales
We explore Welsh New Year traditions with cultural historian Mark Rees, hear winter walking inspiration from Nia Lloyd Knott, and visit an award-winning hill farm in Breconshire.
We welcome the first Country Focus of 2026 with a look at some of the beliefs and traditions that mark the start of a new year in rural Wales. Ifan speaks with cultural historian Mark Rees to explore customs such as calenig and the folklore surrounding the turn of the year.
We also seek a little January motivation out on the Taff Ely Ridgeway, where walking guide, mountain leader and author Nia Lloyd Knott shares her passion for exploring the outdoors in winter.
Reporter Rhodri Davies travels to Breconshire to meet hill farmer Kevin Parry, winner of the 2025 John Gittins Memorial Award for his contribution to the Welsh sheep industry. Kevin discusses his work with Welsh Mules, Brecknock Hill Cheviots and Beulah Speckled Face sheep, his commitment to promoting the sector, and the challenges Welsh farming may face in the year ahead.
