Angus Og: The Making of a Tabloid Teuchter

The story behind artist Ewen Bain’s beloved Hebridean cartoon rascal. An sgeulachd air cùlaibh a’ mheabain eileanach chartùn a chruthaich Eòghann Bain.

He’s a Highland hero, a Gaelic Everyman, a loveable rogue – and he’s a great laugh. He’s the beloved cartoon character, Angus Og! Using original cartoons, actors’ voices and fan-interviews, Angus and his friends on the island of Drambeg (dràma beag!) in the Utter Hebrides are brought to life.

For three decades, cartoonist Ewen Bain used Angus, his ‘teuchter stereotype’, to comment on society and poke fun at the good and the not-so-good in the Daily Record and Sunday Mail. Margaret Thatcher, Billy Connolly, the Royal family, Rod Stewart, Lairds, wannabe Gaels, and the Church – few escaped Angus Og’s attention and Ewen Bain’s satire.

The programme features some of Angus’s classic adventurers – giving voice to Angus, his mother, his best friend Lachie, his on-off girlfriend Mairileen, local Spey-wife Granny McBrochan and the hapless Constable McPhater.

Laoch Ghàidhealach a bha cho seòlta ri sionnach ach a chord rinn uile cho math. An caractar cartùn ainmeil, Angus Òg.

Tha Angus agus a charaidean air eilean Drambeg air an toirt beò tro chartùnaichean, guthan chleasaichean agus agallamhan le luchd-leantainn.

Fad trithead bhliadhna, bha an neach-ealain Eòghann Bain a’ cleachdadh Angus airson a bheachdan a thoirt seachad air naidheachdan is eile agus airson magadh air iomadh rud anns na pàipearan naidheachd. Cha robh cus ann air nach do bhruidhinn e – Margaret Thatcher, Billy Connolly, an Teaghlach rìoghail, Rod Stewart, uachdaran, daoine a bha a’ feuchainn ri bhith Gàidhealach agus an eaglais.

Chì sibh cuid de na prìomh thachartasan aig Angus anns a’ phrògram seo agus gheibh sibh sealladh air Angus fhèin, a mhàthair, a dheagh charaid Lachie, am bràmair aige, Mairileen, Granny McBrochan agus an truaghan Oifigear Poilis McPhater.
