Russia. Midwinter's Eve, 1811. Napoleon's army threatens war....

A young Russian soldier and the daughter of a wealthy landowner are having to furtively plan their wedding.

Her parents refuse consent so the secret ceremony is to take place at midnight in a tiny chapel miles from anywhere.

But a severe blizzard plays havoc with their arrangements....
