Bangor Cathedral at 1,500

Archaeologist, Dr Erin Lloyd Jones, highlights the 1500th anniversary of Bangor Cathedral, one of the oldest cathedrals in the UK.

Founded by Saint Deiniol, Bangor Cathedral has served as a significant religious site since the sixth century surviving fires, an attack by King John, and even Viking raids. It's also the resting place of the king of Gwynedd, Gruffudd ap Cynan, and his son Owain, the very first Prince of Wales.

In this programme, Erin examines Bangor Cathedral’s rich yet turbulent past, uncovers some of the building's architectural secrets, and ponders the role of faith in shaping the region's identity. Plus, the clergy consider what the future holds for the cathedral.
